Plus-sized Role Models :)

Who said Fashion is for skinny models? Well, here’s a look of the most beautiful plus-sized models who’s making it BIG in the Fashion industry!

1.    Tara Lynn

Tara is a plus-sized model who is best known for gracing the cover of the French Elle magazine. The article was about the changing trends of fashion to accommodate more "real-sized" women, and it caused quite a stir in the fashion world. Lynn is a UK size 18, which is about a 14/16 on U.S. sizing charts. Tara is also my most favorite plus size model. J

2.  Justine Legault

A native of Quebec, Canada, Justine has been making waves in the plus-sized modeling world in recent years. She is 5'9" and a size 14. She also models for Asos.

3.  Christina Mendez

Christina made history in the modeling industry by becoming one of the first Hispanic real-size models to be featured in major fashion campaigns. And Christina always dreamt of being a model!

4.  Barbara Brickner

Barbara has maintained a plus-size modeling career for over 10 years. She has modeled for many plus-size designers; most notably for Italian company Elena Miro, appearing solo in their 2000 calendar. In 2000, Brickner launched a line of plus-size maternity clothing named BB Maternity, sold through U.S. department stores.

5.  Silvia Rho

Silvia is a Korean-American who is 5'10" and wears a size 16. She has done a lot of catalog work and has recently been signed by a modeling agency, so we're sure to see a lot more of her in the future!

6.  Anansa Sims

Anansa comes by her beauty honestly; her mother is supermodel Beverly Johnson, who was the first woman of color to grace the cover of American Vogue in 1974.  She also models for Glamour Magazine.
7.   Natalie Laughlin

Natalie was the first plus-size model to be on a billboard in Times Square. She is 5'9" and a size 12-to-14.

8. Whitney Thompson

Season 10 of America’s Next Top Model was when plus-size models went prime time. That’s because a 5’10”, blond bombshell in a size 10 dress beat out scores of bony, generic wannabe models to become the first plus-size girl to win. As part of her prize package, the Jacksonville native won a contract with Elite Model Management and a sponsorship deal with CoverGirl.

Even though ANTM host
Tyra Banks suggested Whitney Thompson was more of a “full-figured model” than a plus-size one, the zesty Floridian has already broken down barriers and paved the way to mainstream success for bigger girls who dream of the glamorous life of a fashion model.

9.  Ashley Graham

Ashley is a plus-size model who is best known as a lingerie model for the plus-size clothing store Lane Bryant. She is 5'9" and a size 16.

10.  Kate Dillon

One of the first of the plus size supermodels, Kate was also named one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in the year 2000. Kate became anorexic as a teenager due to childhood teasing about her weight, then went on to become a fashion model. However, Kate eventually transitioned to plus-sized modeling after consulting a nutritionist and putting on a healthy amount of weight for her 5'11" frame.
“I firmly believe that what makes you sexy and beautiful is not the size of your body or the colour lipstick you have on. What really makes you sexy is what you project, your confidence, and your self awareness, having a great sense of humour and being really smart.” -Kate

11. Fluvia Lacerda

Brazilian plus-sized model Fluvia was working as a nanny in New York City, when a magazine editor approached and told her to consider becoming a plus-sized model. Lucerda is now an international model, considered by many in the modeling industry to be the "plus-sized Gisele Bundchen."

12.     Maggie Brown

This Hawaii-raised hottie got her big break after winning Tyra Banks’ horribly named Thick and Sexy model search in 2006. She quickly signed to Wilhelmina Models and has worked for Macy’s, Mervyns and more. Her exotic, Asian look and voluptuous curves keep this plus-size model busy.

13.     Crystal Renn

Her name may sound like a porn star’s, but this beautiful brunette is undoubtedly one of the most popular plus-size models working today.. As a 14-year-old aspiring model, she was told to lose almost 1/3 of her body weight in order to get work. That  triggered a series of eating disorders that eventually drove her out of the business. After some time for reflection, however, she regained the weight and rebranded herself as a healthy, voluptuous plus-size model. Crystal remains the only model in her niche industry to have appeared in all four international editions of Vogue magazine.

14.     Emme Aronson

Emme is a plus size model that has always had a problem losing weight. She has made appearances on television, hosting Fashion Emergency on the television show E!. She has been spotted on many television channels and cable networks promoting women’s related issues and social life. She has made it into print in People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People, Ladies’ Home Journal, and even Glamour. Emme  is a published author, three times over, with topics of depression, beauty, and relationships.

15.     Chloe Marshall

This vivacious Brit is proof of just how far plus-size models have come. No longer content to grace magazine pages or fashion runways, they are now invading beauty pageants too. Chloe is a finalist for the Miss England title, already having beat out seven presumably skinny girls for the title of Miss Surrey. Miss England will be crowned in July 2008, but Chloe Marshall already has a juicy contract with agency Models Plus to fall back on. She oozes confidence, is as bubbly as they come and has a bright future ahead of her, win or lose.

The models above are just a living proof that nothing can ever hinder you from anything you dream of. These girls once aspired to become a model and look at where they are right now? They’re out there ruling fashion magazines! So girl, if you have a dream, don’t let anything (even your body weight) blow it apart. Rock it and game on!

Be Proud,
